Best Mixed Use Building
Serif and The Line Hotel is a notable 12-story mixed-use development situated at the intersection of Market, Turk, and Taylor Streets in San Francisco, CA. Designed by Handel Architects and built by Lend Lease, this project encompasses 81,500 square feet and consists of 583 pre-glazed GFRC (Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete) panels. This strategic location bridges Union Square, the Tenderloin, and the South of Market districts, offering 242 new residences and hotel rooms.
The architectural design employed GFRC as the ideal material to accommodate the building’s complex geometric facade. The majority of the wall panels were pre-glazed in Willis Construction’s production plant, ensuring precision and quality. These multi-faceted, skin-shaped panels were meticulously crafted to wrap around the building’s curved inside and outside corners, enhancing its modern aesthetic.
The design of Serif and The Line Hotel required a material that could handle intricate geometric shapes while maintaining structural integrity and visual appeal. GFRC panels were chosen for their lightweight, durable properties, making them the perfect solution for the building’s facade. The pre-glazing process in Willis Construction’s production plant ensured that each panel met the highest standards of quality and consistency.
The use of GFRC allowed the architects to create a dynamic facade that seamlessly blends with the building’s surroundings. The panels’ ability to form multi-faceted shapes enabled the design to include complex curves and angles, adding depth and character to the structure. This innovative approach not only enhanced the building’s aesthetic but also contributed to its structural performance.
Serif and The Line Hotel’s unique design earned it the 2023 PCI National Merit Award for Best Mixed Use Building, recognizing the project’s excellence in combining residential and hotel spaces within a single structure. The award highlights the successful collaboration between Willis Construction, Handel Architects, and Lend Lease in bringing this visionary project to life.
The integration of GFRC panels provided several benefits, including reduced weight on the building’s framework, cost savings in materials and installation, and enhanced durability. The panels’ pre-glazed finish ensured a sleek, modern appearance that will endure over time with minimal maintenance. This project exemplifies the potential of GFRC in creating high-performance, visually stunning buildings in urban environments.
