The University of Southern California (USC) has long embraced Italian Renaissance architectural style throughout its campus, and the USC Social Sciences Interdisciplinary Building, Dr. Verna and Peter Dauterive Hall, continues this tradition. Designed by HKS Architects, Inc., with engineering by John A. Martin Associates and construction by Morley Builders, this project seamlessly integrates Architectural Precast and GFRC elements to achieve a Romanesque design that complements the intricate brickwork.
Willis Construction played a pivotal role in fabricating large unitized precast pieces to streamline the installation process. These substantial elements, including two-story window surrounds, the main entrance, and horizontal crowns at the second and fifth floors, were erected using cranes, ensuring a watertight and structurally sound building. Smaller precast components were delivered to the jobsite for the masonry trade to install, further enhancing the building’s aesthetic coherence.
The USC Social Sciences Interdisciplinary Building is a testament to the enduring appeal of historical design choices executed with modern precast technology. This project, along with other notable Willis Construction projects on the USC campus, such as the USC Student Health Center and the USC Parkside International Residential College, demonstrates the versatility and elegance of Architectural Precast in achieving a cohesive architectural vision.
The use of Architectural Precast and GFRC in the USC Social Sciences Interdisciplinary Building highlights the advantages of these materials in achieving complex architectural designs. The project’s Italian Renaissance style necessitated intricate precast shapes best fabricated in a controlled environment. Willis Construction’s expertise in producing large unitized pieces facilitated an efficient installation process, reducing on-site labor and ensuring a stronger, watertight structure.
One of the key benefits of using larger precast pieces is the enhanced durability and water resistance they provide. By minimizing the number of joints and seams, these large elements contribute to a more robust building envelope. This approach was particularly beneficial for the two-story window surrounds, the main entrance, and the horizontal crowns, where precision and structural integrity were paramount.
The smaller precast components, including vertical columns, horizontal wainscots, and GFRC window arches at the fifth floor, were meticulously crafted to align with the project’s design requirements. The post-applied tile and emblems added at the jobsite further accentuated the building’s historical aesthetic, blending seamlessly with the intricate brickwork.
Willis Construction’s collaboration on previous projects at USC, such as the Student Health Center and Parkside International Residential College, has consistently demonstrated the firm’s capability to meet the rigorous demands of historical design while leveraging the advantages of modern precast technology. These projects collectively highlight the versatility, durability, and aesthetic appeal of Architectural Precast and GFRC in creating timeless architectural landmarks on the USC campus.
