The University of California, Berkeley commissioned Smith Group to redesign Sutardja Dai Hall, a classroom, office, and laboratory building intended to replace the outdated Davis Hall. This new facility supports the College of Engineering’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and includes an auditorium, classrooms, engineering laboratories, faculty and staff offices, and specialized facilities for the CITRIS program (Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society). CITRIS aims to create solutions for large-scale social and commercial problems that affect daily life, making this building an integral part of advancing societal technology.
Balancing the building’s design with the Arts & Crafts architectural context of the campus while fulfilling the requirements of a modern high-tech research facility was a significant challenge. The architects at Smith Group employed human-scale elements, rich textures, and fine details to honor the traditional craftsman style. The resulting design is both functional and aesthetically pleasing, reflecting the rigorous standards of modern research facilities while integrating seamlessly with the historical context of the UC Berkeley campus.
