142,000 square feet of Architectural Precast consisting of 802 panels
The UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay, located in San Francisco, CA, stands as a beacon of modern healthcare infrastructure. Owned by UCSF Medical Center, designed by Stantec, and constructed by DPR Construction Co., this project utilizes 142,000 square feet of Architectural Precast panels to create a durable, functional, and visually appealing medical facility. With 802 precast panels featuring light and medium sandblast finishes, the design expresses a cohesive architectural style throughout the campus.
The Architectural Precast panels, meticulously crafted by Willis Construction, provide exceptional structural integrity and aesthetic appeal. Posttensioning was used to support the large-scale panels that span from floor to floor, allowing for expansive surfaces without the typical horizontal joints. This innovative approach achieved the designer’s intent of seamless spandrel and column cover elements, resulting in a modern and unified look.
The UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay project demonstrates the versatility and beauty of Architectural Precast concrete. The use of precast panels allowed for greater design flexibility, enabling the architects to achieve a cohesive and sophisticated look that aligns with the advanced medical services provided within. The light and medium sandblast finishes added depth and texture to the building’s facade, enhancing its visual appeal.
The collaboration between Stantec, DPR Construction Co., and Willis Construction was instrumental in the successful completion of this project. The “Design Build” process facilitated close collaboration during pre-construction, allowing for the exploration of innovative design options. This approach not only achieved the desired aesthetic but also resulted in cost savings, providing a more exact match to the design intent at a lower cost than the original budget.
The UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay exemplifies how Architectural Precast panels can be used to create state-of-the-art healthcare facilities. The durable and long-lasting attributes of precast concrete were a perfect choice for the project’s exterior, ensuring the building’s structural integrity and minimal maintenance requirements. The innovative use of posttensioning to support large-scale panels further enhanced the building’s design and functionality.
Awarded the 2015 PCI National Merit Award for Best Hospital, the UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay stands as a testament to the potential of Architectural Precast panels in healthcare construction.
